Five faculty members from Gatton College of Pharmacy achieve specialty certification - January 3, 2012
- Five faculty members at East Tennessee State University’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy have achieved specialty certification that indicates they have knowledge and training to practice in their areas of expertise at the most advanced levels of the profession.
The five faculty members and their certifications are Drs. John Bossaer, board certified in oncology pharmacy; Brian Cross, board certified in ambulatory care pharmacy; Chad Gentry, board certified in ambulatory care pharmacy; Stacy Miller, board certified in psychiatric pharmacy; and David Cluck, certified as an HIV pharmacist. Bossaer, Gentry, Miller, and Cluck are assistant professors in the ETSU Department of Pharmacy Practice. Cross is an associate professor and vice chair of the department.
To achieve specialty certification, candidates must pass an examination to demonstrate their expertise. The board certifications are intended to improve patient care through recognition and promotion of specialized training, knowledge and skills in pharmacy.
The exams were administered by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties, the premier post-licensure certification organization serving the field, as well as the American Academy of HIV Medicine.
Thirteen faculty members in the Department of Pharmacy Practice are now either board certified or hold added credentials in their areas of expertise and practice, said Dr. Ralph Lugo, department chair. That total includes four faculty members who are certified diabetes educators.
“The quality of our faculty is outstanding,” Lugo said. “The pursuit of advanced certification by our faculty not only benefits the students at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy, but also positively influences the practice of pharmacy and care of patients in our region.”
